Bottom line, one of the main reasons printers are on the way out is because maintaining them is so expensive. The ink and the paper costs are unnecessary these days, making printing a luxury some people just don't have time or extra money for.

Businesses used to send out e-mails to customers that gave them coupons or other promotions that they would need to print and come into the store to use. These days, a lot of companies are taking advantage of the way people watch tv and have begun sending those same promotions through commercials or other programs but instead of printing something out and going to the store, viewers simply go online to the company's website.
13: Short Documents
These days most documents are shorter. While something may have been 10 pages in the past, it's customary now to share the same information in a page or two. For something so small, it makes printing seem like a waste of paper and because of that, people often find other ways to share the information, like email.
12: Social Media
Social media has changed the way we do things. Our communication with each other no longer relies on us getting together or relying on correspondence like mail delivery or phone calls. Now, if we have an announcement, we can simply share it on Facebook or through a mass e-mail. There's no more need to print up invitations and send them out.
11: Coupons
There once was a time where printing out coupons was something you had to do but these days, most stores have apps that contain the coupon information and if not, simply mentioning the coupon seems to be just as good in some stores.

Before, some insurance companies would require that you print out your policy information to keep with you in your car but now there are helpful apps so proof of insurance is right on your phone.
9: Boarding Passes
One of the things people used to have to print was their boarding pass to get on to flights. With the revolution of phone apps, this is no longer necessary.
8: Green Movement
A lot of people are into the Green Movement that encourages people to reduce, recycle and reuse. A lot of people have stopped using printers and started going completely digital because it creates less waste and doesn't use up paper.
7: Document Sharing
Sites like Google are making it easier than ever to create files of all kinds and then share them instantly. There are even ways to collaborate on documents with other Google users so everyone can see what's being created as it's being created.
6: Flash Drive
Flash drives (or thumb drives) are an easy way to carry files on something that's literally smaller than a finger. With the ability to carry about 4GB on each drives, you can have your entire office available wherever there is a computer or device.
5: USB Clip
This is a way of keep paper documents with their digital files. This means that the original document only needs to be printed once and to share it with others, they can review the digital file on the USB.
4: Tablets
Thanks to tablets like Kindle, iPad and other readers, there's no need to carry around books or make copies of the pages inside. Ebooks can also be accessed from tablets so there is no reason to print anything.
3: Files
Files are now stored on computers. Large offices are switching everything to digital files and so the need to duplicate files on a copier or printer is almost nonexistent.
2: Briefcases
Briefcases were originally invented so business people didn't have to carry around stacks of paper and documents but these days briefcases are for everything but documents. You're more likely to carry your iPad in there than the report from yesterdays meeting.

Back in the day, people used to like the to carry paper everywhere but these days more and more things are being done electronically. Less people need to print things off in order to carry them around.
