Isolation is a gift
Had a rather closed social life during his stay in Columbia. He did not go out and all he did was study. This is one of the reasons why there were conspiracy theories that he did not study at Columbia. After all, while most of the students were drinking and having fun, Obama had spent his time studying. When he was on campus, Obama concentrated on academic work, spending most of his time in Butler Library "like a monk", and as a result made very few friends.

Spare change?
Due to his status as a transfer student, Obama had to live off-campus. He claims to have spent his first night sleeping in an alley, and taking his morning shower with the homeless next to an open fire hydrant, as he had arrived too late to be let into the apartment.

His desire to become the best lead him to devise instruments that will make him as sharp as possible. He used to run 5 miles every morning (around Central Park) to keep his head clear and fast on Sundays to keep his body healthy. He also quits drugs and "stopped getting high".
