15: Enchantment
Elena Kalis' photos capture underwater beauty and enchantment at its finest. We can only imagine how many shots it would have taken in order to get the perfect one!

Elena uses an array of vibrant colors in her photography, and we absolutely love the bright color of the Queen of Heart's costume, as well as the pink flamingos.
13: Toys and Props
Elena Kalis also used a lot of props in each shot, not only to create the perfect Alice in Wonderland environment, but also to keep her models entertained, saying they "were happy to participate...as it involved a lot of toys and props to play with."
12: Favourite Characters
Elena Kalis' inclusion of a wide range of characters must also be admired, featuring our favourites such as the talking flowers, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, and of course, Alice.
11: Awe-inspiring
We cannot help but look on in awe at each photo and at how perfect each shot seems to be, despite the difficulty in capturing scenes underwater.

When viewing the rest of Elena Kalis' work, it is evident that the underwater theme is one she continues to revisit in her photography.
9: The Magic
The photographer also wanted to convey the sense of mystique and magic she felt underwater. "I often feel like I am in another dimension, just like Alice who found herself in a strange place when she fell into the rabbit hole one warm afternoon. A place where reality subsides and the closeness of water envelopes you, where sounds are distant and light plays tricks with your eyes and perception."
8: Future
Despite capturing over 30 photos so far in the series, Elena Kalis says the project is far from over. "I can’t say that it is finished even now...I still have a lot of ideas to try."
7: Shot Over Two Years
In total, the project took two years to shoot. Elena Kalis says, "I had to keep shootings short and fun."
6: The Bahamas
It is no surprise Elena chose the theme of underwater for her photographs, especially when she lives on a small island in The Bahamas, a location famous for its breathtaking natural beauty and crystal blue sea.
5: Being Underwater
The photographer, Elena Kalis, loves the ocean, and believes it serves as the perfect backdrop to her photographic series. "Underwater is where I spend a lot of time; snorkeling, diving, photographing. It is fascinating how the world changes down below."
4: Helping Hands
Elena Kalis also states that it was easy to get help from her son and her children's friends to act out the role of the other characters in the novel, such as the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter.
3: The Model
The girl featured as Alice in the photographs is Elena Kalis’ ten-year-old daughter Sacha, who served as the perfect model according to the photographer because she is "the same age as Carroll's Alice...She is a natural mermaid."
2: Theme
The project, titled 'Alice in Waterland and Looking Glass' is a series that explores the underwater adventures of the much-loved character of Alice.
1: Inspiration
For Elena Kalis’ new photographic project, she was inspired by the intriguing world of Lewis Carroll's novels, 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass'.
