Hillary Clinton, a prominent NY senator at the time, ran a strong campaign in 2008 to possibly become the first woman elected to the presidency of the United States. After a long and bitter battle she finally conceded to Barack Obama who eventually won the election.

Hillary Diane Rodham was born on October 26, 1947 in Chicago. A bright and happy child, she showed tremendous promise from a young age.
14: Hillary's Roots
Her father Hugh, managed a successful textile business and her mother, Dorothy was a homemaker. Hillary had 2 younger bothers.
13: Hillary's Formative Years
Hillary grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois, a bedrock Republican community, 20 minutes from downtown Chicago. It was the epitome of suburban middle class life. Hillary was an eager and active student in grade school, participating in swimming, and other sports.

Hillary also earned numerous awards as a Brownie and a Girl Scout. In high school she participated in student council and the school newspaper.

While still in high school she attended a speech given by Dr Martin Luther King Jr. This event would prove to have a powerful effect on her thinking for the rest of her life.
10: Undergraduate at Wellesley
In 1965 she enrolled in Wellesley College as a political science major. As her political views began to shift, rather than being a radical, she always advocated for working for change within the system, not in revolt.
9: Hillary's First Brush With Fame
While at Wellesley, as student body president, Hillary was chosen to speak at her class's graduation ceremony. The speech was so unconventional that she was mentioned in a story in Life Magazine.
8: Yale Graduate
Hillary graduated from Yale in 1973. Bill Clinton first proposed marriage to her at that time but she declined. They bought a house together in 1975 in Fayetteville, Arkansas and she finally agreed to marry Bill.
7: Hillary Says I Do
Their wedding took place in October, 1975 in a Methodist ceremony in their living room. Hillary announced that she was keeping the name Hillary Rodham, in an effort to keep their professional lives separate.
6: The Little Rock Years
In 1976 Bill was elected as Attorney General of Arkansas and they moved to Little Rock, the state capitol. This would mark the beginning of a long career in politics for The Clintons.
5: First Lady of Arkansas
In 1977, Rodham co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, a state-level alliance with the Children's Defense Fund. Rodham became First Lady of Arkansas in January 1979, when Bill was elected governor.
4: Hill Brings Home The Bacon
In 1979, Rodham became the first woman to be made a full partner of Rose Law Firm. From 1978 until they entered the White House, she had a higher salary than that of her husband.
3: Two For The Price of One!
Hillary Clinton received sustained national attention for the first time when her husband became a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992. Bill Clinton said that in electing him, the nation would "get two for the price of one", referring to the prominent role his wife would assume.
2: First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton
Along with Senators Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch, Hillary was a force behind the passage of the State Children's Health Insurance Program in 1997. During her run as First Lady, she traveled to 79 countries.
1: America's First Family - 1993
On February 27, 1980, Rodham gave birth to a daughter, Chelsea, her only child. 13 years later they would move from Arkansas to the white house.
